'Service to Mankind' at a glance: The traditional Muslim settlement better knowm as Thekkepuram has been in existence in the heart of the trade city Kozhikode for more than seven hundred years. With a uneque blend of Brahmin and Islamic cultures, Thekkepuram thrived on their own likes and dislikes unseen elsewhere in Kerala. Kuttichira, the large tank lying between two spectacular mosques belonging to typical Kerala architecture and had an unparallel role in the urban fabric of Thekkepuram. From all walks of life made a habit to meet in Kuttichira to shre their thoughts, ideas and feelings. It was on such a gathering in the year 1956, by a group of youngsters mainly college students, sowed the seeds of an organization. They were enthusiastic in up lifting the citizens of the community intellectually, educationally, socially and culturally. Hence they called their organization CIESCO, and started the service from its intellectual part by commencing reading room and library for the public. Ever since its inception, CIESCO has been upholding the motto “Service to Mankind”. On looking back to these 53 years, CIESCO is hardly any field of social service where it has not put its foot prints………
Public Library& Reading room: As a birth day present to Kerala state, the library was started on 1st November 1956. The library has a grade affiliation to Kerala State Library have more than 20,000 books.
CIESCO Girls Home (Yatheemkhana): The first orphan house for girls in Kerala was started by CIESCO in 1977 is approved by the Kerala State Orphans Control Board and affiliated to state Muslim Orphanages Co-ordination Committee. Protect orphans and destitutes by giving them food, cloth, shelter and education to bring them forward in the main stream of the society and nation.An estimate of rupees 7 ½ lakhs is spent yearly for this project.
Technical Institute & I T C: Realising the importence of technical education for the youth,CIESCO started this in 1996 with recognition from centrel and state governments, providing different job-oriented courses. right from the beginning it has kept up a good standard having nearly 250 students. Mechanical diesel(NCVT),Draftsman Civil(NCVT), Civil Engineering (KGCE),Electronics Diploma(AITES), Automobile Diploma(AITES),Computer hardware and Network course are the important courses taught here.
Free Medical Aid Centre: CIESCO Kuwait Chapter is very active part of the organisation. With its dedication we started a free medical aid centre at Kuttichira this year 2008. A doctor and two nursing staff are available at the medical centre.An average of 50 patients receive free consultation and medicine daily. The estimated expenditure is Rs.5 lakhs in a year. We do have plan to improve the facility with laboratory, X-ray, E.C.G etc; by shifting to an independent building in future. Patients suffering from major diseases are supported with medicine and equipments, including financial assistance from CIESCO Relief fund, whenever necessary. CIESCO and its humble workers have the satisfaction that the organization has always stood for the well-being of the society, especially the people living around Thekkepuram.We are extremely happy to note that the projects and programmes of CIESCO have been supported by the well wishers.
Relief Committee: It was formed in 1986.Charitable and relief activities throughout the year is yet important service of CIESCO. Applications are received from the needy, and our members meet them at their locations to understand the seriousness and genuiness of their problems. Education and health are the main concideration under relief. Poor students studying professional courses are helped by giving scholarships. CIESCO has already adopted 15 students with the assistance of philanthropic people and yet we are receiving several applications for financial assistance. CIESCO takes this challenge to provide maximum help to those brilliant, but poor students.
Public Utility Scheme: It is another wing of CIESCO, Started in 1988.Interest money from the bank normally discouraged for personal use, are collected from our members and well wishers to materialise for public utility under the guidance of Islamic Scholars. CIESCO has contribute interest acquired in the various bank accounts of CIESCO. Comfort tent at burial ground helps the employees as well as the relatives of the deceased to conduct funeral with ease and comfort in any climate. Public wells and toilets at hospitals and coastel residence areas, bus-waiting shed etc.. are built in different parts of the district.Wheel chair,walking stick,water bed,curtain etc. are given for the use of patients. Last year, for girls and boys, two toilet stations were renovated at the Govt. Ganapath H.S. Kallai,with an estimated cost of Rs.80,000/- and ward No.53 at the Calicut Medical College Hospital was renovated totally with a cost of Rs.90,000/- approx. Also, under the scheme Pain&Paliative Centre was given assistance to buy an ambulance for the medical team to visit patients with major chronic diseases at their home to provide treatment and medicines. A public addressing sound system was installed this year at Calicut Medical College meternity ward for easy communication between patient and dependents, with a cost of nearly Rs.45,000/-.
CIESCO Junior School: 1974 CIESCO started its English Medium Junior School with classes from L K G to IVth Standard. The objective is to read quality education to the poor children in backward area.
CIESCO Vanitha Vedi: It is started in 1990, is a plat- form for the ladies to work together with their unique abilities. Classes and work-shops are frequently held on cooking, house-keeping,embroidery,home science etc. Recently held handi –craft exhibition with 23 stalls were full with different glass and textile painting works, embroidery, pottery works,monumental works etc. Health classes and moral classes are also held during holidays.Seminar held on “domestic waste eradication” under joint auspicious of CIESCO Library& Vanitha vedi attracted the public in large. Cleaning were made in and around CIESCO park and Kuttichira surrowndings with the assistance of NSS Volunteers from Govt. H.S.S Kuttichira as well.
Senior Citizens Forum: In 1983, the internal year for aged ,CIESCO started this,which gives opportunity to the elders and retired to spend their leisure time in a creative way in the society and to obtain mental peace and satisfaction. With the dedication of the members, this forum started a helpage scheme to the poor & sick and currently providing a monthly pension of Rs.300/- to hundred eligible families, which is a well known pension project in the social service field other than government. Senior Citizens Forum also conducts, Free medical camps,Ramzan relief work, dress bank, financial aid to Leprosy patients etc… are some of the activities of CIESCO Senior Citizen Forum.
CIESCO Youth wing: This started in 1981 confirms the participation & service of our youth in CIESCO activities. It develops the skills and capabilities of the youth in different fields.Debating classes and seminars on various subjects,shuttle badminton,cricket tournaments, blood donors forum, text book bank to help poor students etc., are the main functions of this wing. The recently conducted one-day IT seminar for college students was a great success and has plan to continue the same jointly with MSS Youth wing.
Balajanasakhyam: To encourage service – mind in school students, CIESCO started “Balajanasakhyam” in 1965 and is affiliated to all Kerala Balajanasakyam. Quiz programme, art& game competitions, hand written magazine, holiday camps etc. are some of the activities.
CIESCO Intellectual & Cultural wing: It plays an important role for the personnel development in the society.Scholars and dignitaries from different walks of life express their views and experiences in classes by which the youth get moral lessons for their life. Symposium and debatinngs are held on various subjects by specialists.
Information & Guidance bureau: Educational courses, Governmental/ Public Sector announcements, job vacancies etc; are brought in to the attention of candidates from this locality through bulletin board in CIESCO-Efforts are also made to obtain assistance to eligible persons for the social welfare project of the Govt. study classes and seminars are also conducted in this regard.
Project Planning & Development Wing: As you all know , for the last 35 years CIESCO have been conducting merit evenings to support and encourage talented students of school & college efforts are made jointly with similar social organizations to provide educational awareness to parents as well. Timely co-operation & guidance from governmental departments and local bodies help a lot for the smooth administration of CIESCO projects. We are also thankful to press – channel media for their continued support for our activities from time to time. However the backbone of CIESCO projects are the sincere support from the philanthropic, generous public, well wishers, dedicated members from different walks of life& staff.
CIESCO Park: In 1980 CIESCO`s own building was completed in the land of Calicut Corporation Assan Koya Mulla Park and CIESCO has taken the responsibility to maintain this park neat and tidy. The radio and T.V. Complex, multi-story- CIESCO head quarters building and park beautifies the Kuttichira surroundings.The public at a large , spend their evenings in the park to listen news bulletins and other cultural programmes.
